![]() So apparently the problem was with the USB drive. This USB drive booted OK, but its WiFi still didn’t work. This laptop had no problems with WiFi on bootable USB drives until now. I tried rebooting the Ubuntu USB drive in a laptop computer. The dongle worked in that Windows computer. So now my alternative solution was to plug the WiFi dongle into another desktop computer that likewise depended upon an external dongle. While WiFi was working, maybe I should have tried at least one spare USB adapter in that computer, to make sure it had Linux drivers and was ready to go. To connect, I used an external USB adapter. This was an old desktop computer whose motherboard did not offer WiFi circuitry. One possibility was that the WiFi dongle was bad. My Google searches weren’t turning up good explanations, so I decided to write this post, hoping that it would eventually arrive at an explanation of how to solve this problem. I had no idea what had caused this, and my initial attempts at a solution failed. I couldn’t get to webpages, for instance, or download Ubuntu updates. I noticed this because, at the same time, my Internet connection was suddenly absent. In its place, when there wasn’t simply black space, I would occasionally see a question mark, or a bubble containing three dots. That icon was supposed to be next to the audio and power icons, like this:īut now, suddenly, the WiFi icon was gone. Normally, when I ran Ubuntu, it would display the vaguely funnel-shaped WiFi icon at the right of the screen, an icon that looked a little like the path left by a car’s windshield wiper. But then, as described in another post, I had fiddled with that installation and, in the process, I seem to have wrecked its ability to go online. I had installed Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS onto a USB drive.
